What is taboo? In simple words, a taboo is a rule against doing or saying something in a particular culture or religion.

Can you think of some taboos that in our society people avoid talking about?

Sex, personal health problems, personal issues, religion, and… money.

Why people are afraid to talk about money, some of the reasons people avoid talking about money might sound very familiar to you: In our society, discussing how much we earn or how much things cost is rude and bragging.

Today I will tell you why you need to break the social norm and start talking about money.

1. talking about money will make you feel at ease with it

Someone I know, who lives in a very struggling life due to his financial situation, once told me: I hate rich people. On the other hand, someone I know who lives an abundant life told me: money is a tool, learn how to use it.

Two people have a very different attitude towards money, resulted in very different financial situations. They are more or less the same age, born and raised in well-developed countries in Europe. But one hates money; the other uses money as a tool to live a better life.

When you will feel comfortable talking about money, you feel at ease with it,  and learn how to use it as a tool to live a better life.

2. talking about money makes you more aware of it

I have told this story before. In my 20s, I never paid attention to my finances. I work, earn and spend. Money comes and goes. My bank account is at a bus stop. I had a lavish lifestyle, traveled a lot, and had tons of great experiences. But I was spending carelessly. As long as I have enough to spend, I would purchase the thing or spend it on a trip. After learning so much and talking about money with people, I realized that I could have saved thousands on airplane tickets by using credit card points. I could have saved thousands by not making spontaneous purchases.

If I were to be more aware of money and how to use it properly, I would have still had a lavish lifestyle while saving up and investing for my future self.

After recently talked about money with my brother-in-law, he immediately saved more than 80 Swiss Franc per month on internet costs. Did that lower his quality of life? Of course not.

Talking about money helps you be more aware of it and build a stronger financial future.

3. Talking about money helps you understand how to achieve more freedom in life.

Take a moment and think, If money is not an issue, what would you do tomorrow?

Like all of you, I also have dreams. I can either choose to work till the official retirement age, which is rising all the time, and then live the dream life I truly want with an old body. Or I can start learning how to use money as a tool and use this tool effectively to achieve my dream life.

According to the research done by the authors in <The Millionaire Next Door>, a person’s net worth is directly correlated with how much they spend on managing the money.

Talking about money helps you ease with it, be more aware of it, and allow you to build a system and achieve freedom in life. Your quality of life has not changed, but how you can live your life will be changed.
